HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST BACKPACKING HAMMOCK

TYPE OF HAMMOCK

There are 3 different types of hammocks you can choose from depending on how you plan to use it.

The PARACHUTE NYLON HAMMOCKS are very durable and resistant. They have a bit of stretch that makes them very comfortable. These are ideal to sleep several nights in a row. They come in single and double models.

The ULTRALIGHT HAMMOCKS are compact and made with very light materials. They are designed to be used for fast or lightweight hiking trips. Bear in mind that what you cut weight you lose comfort as well.

The EXPEDITION HAMMOCKS are made with high-end materials to provide the maximum protection during backpacking expeditions. They usually come with different accessories like extra guy-lines, a rainfly and a mosquito net.

MATERIAL: COTTON OR NYLON

Most of the hammocks on the market are made out of one of two materials: cotton or nylon.

COTTON HAMMOCKS can be made in more attractive designs due to its weave. However, they are heavy, bulky, and “attract water”, providing a poor performance during wet weather (they dry very slow).

NYLON HAMMOCKS are the way to go for camping trips. They’re lighter, less bulky and the nylon repels water, providing great performance in bad weather.

SIZE

The length and width of your hammock are normally a matter of personal preferences.

If you plan to sleep alone, going for a hammock that is too wide can wrap around you further and make you feel claustrophobic.

If you’re tall, you should consider getting a hammock that’s 8 feet or longer.

MAXIMUM WEIGHT CAPACITY

You should always consider your own weight and the maximum weight capacity of the hammock. There are some extra-large models to suit tall and heavy campers, and double models for those who want to share it with friends or partners.

Loading the hammock with more than the recommended maximum weight capacity can reduce the lifespan of the product, and is potentially dangerous.

SUSPENSION SYSTEM

There are different suspension systems available, but they are normally reduced to a combination of straps and carabiners. Some models don’t include these, so make sure to check this out before heading to the mountains.

The longer the straps and the more attachment points it has, the better. This gives you more flexibility to work around different types of trees.

Use straps that are tree-friendly. These models are normally wider (0.75 inches +), flat and made from nylon of polyester.

INSULATION

Most hammocks are made with a breathable nylon material to keep you cool during the summer months.

However, if you plan to use it in chilly weather you’ll need to look at some sort of insulation. Some models come with handy accessories like sleeping pads, underquilts or topquilts.

Think about the weather you plan to face and get what you need.

ACCESSORIES

There are a couple of hammock accessories that can come in handy, depending of the area where you plan to camp.

An INTEGRATED MOSQUITO NET might be essential to camp in buggy areas. I couldn’t have been happier with my Hennessy while camping in deserted (and buggy!) beaches around the Caribbean and that was because of its mosquito net.

Also, if you expect rain in the area where you plan to camp, A RAINFLY is an important accessory to have. I would recommend getting a slightly bigger model and one you can attach to the ground, so it will keep you dry even if the rain comes with side winds.
